When I think of trails that encompass everything a hike in the backcountry should offer, one of those that come to mind is the Lakeshore Trail in Pictured Rock National Park. Talk about some breathtaking photo opps, this has got to be in the top 10 of awesome views. The Lakeshore Trail is a 42 mile trail that treks between Grand Marais and Munising Michigan in the Upper Peninsula.

New Mexico offers some great trails to backpack and hike. One of those trails is in Bandelier National Monument Park it’s 33,000 acres lay on the slopes of the Jemez Mountains. Most backpackers don’t think of Arkansas to be a prime spot for a long thru-hike. Guess again. The Ozark Highlands Trail is a 165 mile long trail, meticulously routed through scenic areas of the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas and maintained by a large group of volunteers. The trail is well-blazed and has mile markers. It crosses a great deal of streams and is hikeable year-round– with excellent thru-hiking opportunities.

Size Up Your Surroundings
Determine the pattern of the area. Get a feel for what is going on around you. Every environment, whether forest, jungle, or desert, has a rhythm or pattern. This rhythm or pattern includes animal and bird noises and movements and insect sounds. It may also include enemy traffic and civilian movements.

When planning a backpacking trip, I always consider what views or campsites will offer the most bang for the mile. One of my all time favorite desert hikes is the Castner Mountain Trail in Arizona. Words can’t express the breathtaking views this mountian trail has to offer.
